Under the Private Education Act, enacted in December 2009, the Council for Private Education was established to regulate the private education industry in Singapore. Since October 2016, SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) has been responsible for overseeing the private education Sector and has worked closely with the Committee for Private Education (CPE), appointed by SSG, to carry out the functions and governance powers relating to private education under the Private Education Act 2009. The CPE is supported by a team of dedicated staff from SSG to regulate the sector, provide student services, consumer education and facilitate capability development efforts to uplift standards in the local private education industry.

Effective 1 October 2024, CPE will be dissolved and SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) will resume direct responsibility for exercising the functions and powers outlined in the Private Education Act of 2009 and its subsidiary legislation. All Private Education Institutions (PEIs) must comply with the regulations under the Act to continue their operations.
